WAR AND PROPAGANDA

“The first casualty when war comes is truth”

                                                                         U.S Senator Hiram Johnson, 1947s

There is no doubt the history of mankind is the history of wars. Only 300 years of human history, has passed away with the peace in this world. Nevertheless, there are many things that we cannot compromise in the world.

Capitalism vs Communism

In the aftermath of the Second World War two power blocs formed in Europe, one dominated by America and capitalist democracy (though there were exceptions), the other dominated by the Soviet Union and communism. USA and Western Europe Countries are capitalist and they are called “First World Countries”. Communist countries are called “Second World Countries” such as USSR, Bulgaria, Romania etc. And this is occurred a clash of ideologies.

“Radio” as a Great Tool for War

Radio, from its very earliest days, was used as a tool for war. Radio can make a huge different. It was giving basic information and it is a great tool especially for spread propaganda. It is basic, but it has a great impact. By the 1930s, radio had become a prime tool for propaganda and counterpropaganda within and between countries especially during the World War II. The use of radio for war reflects its technical characteristics of being a broadcast medium, subject to interference and with declining costs. The early history of radio shows the importance of both shaping and use of technology for war and peace. Moreover, movies, books, comic books were being used for spreading regime and it is against the communism. There was a one television channel in The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). The aim of the channel spread the state propaganda. Also there was a fear of different regimes like democracy. On the other hand, there is a Third World Countries that they are neither communist nor capitalist, and the only purpose of them is not starving. The term Third World arose during the “Cold War Era” to define countries that remained non-aligned or neutral with either capitalism and NATO (which along with its allies represented the First World) or communism and the Soviet Union (which along with its allies represented the Second World). This definition provided a way of broadly categorizing the nations of the Earth into three groups based on social, political, and economic divisions.

Quotations about War

“Peace at home, peace in the world”

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, The founder of the Turkish Republic and its first President

“All warfare is based on deception.”

Sun Tzu, The Art of War, Chinese Military Commander

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.”                                                                                                                               Dwight D. Eisenhower, speech, American Society of Newspaper Editors, 16 April 1953

“In modern war… you will die like a dog for no good reason.”

Ernest Hemingway, American writer and journalist

“Come you masters of war / You that build all the guns / You that build the death planes You that build the big bombs / You that hide behind walls / You that hide behind desks I just want you to know I can see through your masks.”

                                                                                                                                                          Bob Dylan, American singer, songwriter

WAR PROPAGANDA POSTERS

And these are some of the war propaganda posters were used by Nazis, Soviet Union, China and the U.S. during the World Wars.

TIME TUNNEL 1….

the-eagles-hotel-california-single

I started with BTTF and the movie is about time travel. I would like to move another issue in time travel.
Has anybody don’t know, don’t hear the song “Hotel California”? Probably, it is one of the most important songs in rock history. The song is the title song from the Eagles album of the same name and was released as a single in 1977. And many cover versions of this song have been released. For example; Gipsy Kings, Majek Fashek, William Hung…
Lets move onto the story of “Hotel California”…
The year 1968 was over… Woodstock was over…  At that time, the Americans, are just aware of the Vietnam Syndrome. (Vietnam Syndrome is a term used in the United States, in public political rhetoric and political analysis, to describe the perceived impact of the domestic controversy over the Vietnam War on US foreign policy after the end of that war in 1975.) And some youths were leaving their innocence and dreams in Vietnam and they lost their goals. They’re living with drugs and alcohol. Hotel California was made at this time.
In the summer of 1969, the man who is a hero of the stoy, went on a long journey. When he was passing away from the Hotel California, he decided to take a rest in the hotel. The hotel was a small and a nice place. He was placed in a room. On the second day in the hotel he met with a girl who was staying in the next door. They spent together all the time. Eventually, they felt in love with each other. And they decided to spend holiday together in the Hotel California. The nice ambience of hotel, kind and friendly people, the simplicity all are influenced them. They’d lived an unforgettable summer in the hotel. At the end of the summer, they made a decision for seperation. They promised each other; “If we don’t forget each other, and we love each other too much we will meet again in here in our anniversary”. (the first day that they met)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Until then, they will not contact with each other. So they will find out whether this love is a summer or a real love.
One year has passed… After a long journey, he had arrived again in a Hotel California. That was the first day that they met. But something went terribly wrong. He found a dark, burnt building when he arrived there. The hotel was burnt yesterday. The girl arrived in a hotel the day before for meeting with her love. But she died in a fire. The man was thinking that he lives with her forever, but at the end he lost her forever.
When the members of the Eagles, first heard the story they’re affected and they’ve decided to write something about the story. Finally, Hotel California had emerged at the end of the story.

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
“This could be heaven or this could be hell”
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say…

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year, you can find it here

Her mind is tiffany-twisted, she got the mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the captain,
“Please, bring me my wine”
He said, “we haven’t had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine”
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say…

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They livin’ it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise, bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said “we are all just prisoners here, of our own device”
And in the master’s chambers,
They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can’t kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
“Relax”, said the night man,
We are programmed to receive.
You can checkout any time you like,
But you can never leave!
